Fort Erie Border Guide 2026: Peace Bridge, Crystal Beach & US Crossing Tips
Updated March 2026 · Local border knowledge · No commissions
Fort Erie sits at the southernmost tip of the Niagara Region, directly across the Niagara River from Buffalo, New York — connected by the Peace Bridge, one of the busiest international border crossings in North America. For visitors to Niagara Falls, Fort Erie is the answer to "what's at the other end of the river?" — and it is considerably more interesting than most people assume. Historic battlefields, one of Ontario's best Lake Erie beaches, excellent dining, and the logistical hub of the US–Canada crossing all converge here.
The Peace Bridge: Crossing Between Canada and the United States
Basic Crossing Information
The Peace Bridge connects Fort Erie, Ontario to Buffalo, New York — one of 4 Niagara Region international border crossings (the others being Rainbow Bridge and Whirlpool Bridge at Niagara Falls, and Queenston-Lewiston Bridge to the north). The Peace Bridge carries significant commercial truck traffic in addition to passenger vehicles, which affects wait times differently from the Niagara Falls crossings.
Wait Time Strategy
- Check wait times before you go: The Canada Border Services Agency website and the CBSA Border Wait Times app show live wait times at all crossings. Check before deciding which bridge to use.
- NEXUS cards: If you cross the US–Canada border more than 4–5 times per year, a NEXUS card is worth the application. Dedicated NEXUS lanes consistently reduce crossing time by 60–90 minutes during peak periods.
- Best crossing times at Peace Bridge: Weekday mornings (6–9am) and late evenings (after 8pm). Worst: Friday afternoon to Saturday evening in summer, and Sunday afternoons.
- Peace Bridge vs. Rainbow Bridge: Peace Bridge typically has longer commercial traffic but parallel NEXUS/trusted traveller lanes. Rainbow Bridge (Niagara Falls) handles more tourist traffic but less commercial. Check live waits — conditions change by the hour.
- Duty-free: Duty-free shops on both sides of the Peace Bridge. Canadian residents can bring back C$800 in goods duty-free after 48 hours in the US (C$200 for 24-hour absence).
Attractions in Fort Erie
Old Fort Erie (Historic Site)
Old Fort Erie is a reconstructed War of 1812 fortification on the Niagara River — site of one of the most brutal sieges of the entire war. The 1814 Siege of Fort Erie was fought between American forces holding the fort and British forces attempting to retake it from across the river. The reconstructed fort has costumed interpreters, weapons demonstrations, and the 1814 cannon — a remarkable and undervisited historic site. Open May–October, with full interpretive programming in July–August.
- Location: Lakeshore Rd., Fort Erie — directly on the Niagara River, 5 minutes from the Peace Bridge
- Admission: Adults $10, youth $6, family rates available; Niagara Parks managed
- Hours: May–October, 10am–5pm; extended summer hours July–August
Crystal Beach
Crystal Beach is the jewel of the Fort Erie area — a beautiful white sand beach on Lake Erie (the warmest of the Great Lakes), consistently rated one of the top freshwater beaches in Ontario. The former Crystal Beach Amusement Park (which closed in 1989) has been replaced by a well-maintained beach community with rental cottages, a small commercial strip of restaurants and ice cream shops, and the beach itself: shallow warm water, no undertow, and fine white sand. In summer, the beach area transforms into one of the most pleasant low-key resort communities in Ontario.
- Location: Crystal Beach is a community on the Lake Erie shore, south of Fort Erie proper — about 20 minutes from Niagara Falls by car on Hwy 3
- Best time: July–August for swimming; Lake Erie water temperatures reach 22–25°C at peak summer
- Parking: Municipal parking along the beachfront; free, but fills early on hot summer days
- Accommodation: Rental cottages available through VRBO/Airbnb; often booked months in advance for July–August
Ridgeway: The Fenian Raids Battlefield
Just north of Crystal Beach, the village of Ridgeway was the site of the 1866 Battle of Ridgeway — where Canadian militia fought American Fenian Raiders who had crossed the border to pressure Britain to grant Irish independence. It is the only battle in Canadian history fought entirely between Canadians and Americans on Canadian soil that resulted in a Canadian tactical withdrawal. The Ridgeway Battlefield National Historic Site has interpretive panels; the battle narrative is genuinely interesting for history-minded visitors.
Niagara River Parkway: Fort Erie to Niagara Falls
The Niagara Parkway runs 56 km from Fort Erie at the southern end to Niagara-on-the-Lake at the north. The Fort Erie end of the Parkway, along the river, is one of the quietest and most beautiful sections — broad lawns, mature trees, and views of the Buffalo skyline across the river. Cycling or driving this stretch from Fort Erie to the Welland Canal (10 km) is a recommended experience for anyone who wants to see the Niagara River outside of the tourist zone.
Where to Eat in Fort Erie
The Fort Erie food scene is centred on Garrison Road (the commercial main street) and the Crystal Beach summer community. Key stops:
- Molly's Bar & Grill, Crystal Beach: The summer institution on Erie Rd. at Crystal Beach — patio dining, fish and chips, cold drinks. The quintessential Crystal Beach summer meal.
- Kosta's Restaurant, Ridgeway: Family-run Greek restaurant that has been a local fixture for decades. Lamb dishes are consistently excellent; the spanakopita is made in-house.
- Buffalo side (walking distance from Peace Bridge): Walking across the Peace Bridge to Buffalo (pedestrian crossing permitted) for authentic Buffalo wings at anchor spots like Anchor Bar or Duff's Famous Wings is a legitimate excursion for visitors interested in doing it at the source.
Fort Erie for American Visitors: Why It's Worth Stopping
Many American visitors enter Canada at the Rainbow Bridge (Niagara Falls) and exit at the Peace Bridge — or vice versa — creating a natural loop through the Niagara Peninsula. If you're doing this loop, a 2–3 hour stop in Fort Erie adds Old Fort Erie (15 minutes from the Peace Bridge), a look at the Niagara River from the Canadian side, and potentially a Crystal Beach detour. The drive from Niagara Falls to the Peace Bridge via the Niagara Parkway is one of the most scenic short drives in Ontario.
