Niagara Falls Illumination 2026 — Schedule, Times, and Best Viewing Spots

Published June 11, 2026 · Niagara Falls Guide

The Niagara Falls illumination is one of Canada's most-viewed free spectacles. Every night, Horseshoe Falls and part of the American Falls are lit with powerful coloured LED fixtures — transforming the waterfall into something even more dramatic after dark. Here's everything you need to know for 2026.

Niagara Falls Illumination Schedule 2026

The illumination runs every night of the year from dusk to approximately 11 pm (midnight on Fridays and special events). Exact start times vary by season because dusk shifts:

  • January – March: 5:30 pm – 11:00 pm
  • April – May: 8:30 pm – 11:00 pm
  • June – August: 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm (Fridays until midnight)
  • September – October: 7:30 pm – 11:00 pm
  • November – December: 5:30 pm – 11:00 pm (extended during Winter Festival of Lights)

Note: times are approximate. Heavy fog, extreme weather, or equipment maintenance can delay or cancel illumination. Check the Niagara Parks official site for same-day updates.

Best Viewing Spots for the Illumination

All of these are free to access:

  1. Table Rock — the closest free viewing point to Horseshoe Falls. You can see the full colour cycle from here, feel the mist, and watch the Falls from essentially eye level with the cascade. Best spot in Niagara.
  2. Oakes Garden Theatre — the formal garden amphitheatre 100 metres from the Falls. A little further back, slightly calmer, still excellent.
  3. Queen Victoria Park — the long lawn along the Niagara Parkway. Good if you want to walk along the river during illumination.
  4. Skylon Tower Observation Deck — paid admission, but you get a bird's-eye view of the illuminated Falls. Worth it once.

Fireworks Schedule 2026

In addition to the nightly illumination, Niagara Falls hosts fireworks over the Falls on a regular schedule:

  • Every Friday night, May–September: fireworks at 10:00 pm (approximately)
  • Canada Day (July 1): special fireworks display
  • Civic Holiday (first Monday in August): extended fireworks
  • Labour Day weekend: September fireworks
  • New Year's Eve (December 31): midnight fireworks over the Falls

Fireworks are visible from Table Rock, Queen Victoria Park, and Clifton Hill. No tickets required.

Illumination vs. Winter Festival of Lights

The regular nightly illumination is a colour-cycling light show on the Falls themselves. The Winter Festival of Lights (mid-November through mid-January) is a separate event that adds hundreds of illuminated displays along the Niagara Parkway and in Dufferin Islands — a much larger themed installation. Both happen simultaneously during that period.

Special Illumination Nights

On some evenings, the Falls are lit in specific colours to mark national or international events — Pride Month (June), Canada Day, Remembrance Day (November 11), and others. These are announced by Niagara Parks on their website and social channels.

Tips for Watching the Illumination

  • Arrive before dusk to get a good spot at Table Rock — summer evenings get crowded
  • Bring a jacket — the mist from the Falls makes it 5–10°C cooler than the surrounding area, even in summer
  • Skip the drive-in: all the best viewing spots are within a 5-minute walk; park once and walk
  • Friday nights are the best nights: illumination + fireworks at 10 pm = the best free show in Niagara
