Crossing the US-Canada Border at Niagara Falls: What to Know

Three bridges, passport requirements, wait times, duty-free, and the practical details for crossing between the US and Canadian sides.

The Three Bridges

Rainbow Bridge: The closest to the falls (500 metres). Pedestrian-friendly — you can walk across in 15 minutes. Best for day-tripping between the US and Canadian sides. Car toll: $4.25 USD. Pedestrian toll: $1 CAD.

Whirlpool Rapids Bridge (NEXUS only): 5km north. Reserved for NEXUS pass holders. Fastest crossing if you have the card.

Peace Bridge (Fort Erie–Buffalo): 25km south. The main commercial crossing. Higher volume, longer waits, but connects to Buffalo's airport and highway system. Best if you're coming from/going to the US beyond Niagara.

What You Need

Passport: Required for all crossings. Enhanced driver's licences (available in some US states and Ontario) also work.

NEXUS card: Speeds up crossing dramatically. Separate lanes, shorter lines. Worth getting if you cross regularly.

No passport? You cannot cross. Period. NEXUS or enhanced driver's licence are the only alternatives. Regular driver's licences are NOT sufficient.

Wait Times

Rainbow Bridge: 10-20 minutes on weekday mornings. Up to 45-60 minutes on summer weekends and holidays. Check the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission website for real-time wait times.

Peace Bridge: Generally longer waits than Rainbow. 20-40 minutes typical, 60-90 minutes on peak days.

Best crossing times: weekday mornings before 10 AM. Worst: Sunday evenings (everyone returning), US holiday weekends, Canada Day.

Duty-Free and Customs

Duty-Free shops are on both sides of the Rainbow Bridge. You can buy alcohol, tobacco, and perfume at reduced prices.

Coming into Canada: $200 CAD personal exemption for 24-48 hour trips, $800 for 7+ days. Alcohol: 1.5L wine or 1.14L spirits or 8.5L beer.

Coming into the US: $200 USD for 24-48 hour trips, $800 for 48+ hours. 1L alcohol (must be 21+).

Declare everything. The border agents are experienced — trying to hide purchases creates more problems than the duty would cost.
