The Three Wedding Formats
Niagara weddings fall into three categories:
1. Falls-view ceremony + hotel reception: The landmark spectacle. Ceremony at Oakes Garden Theatre or a Fallsview hotel. Reception in the hotel ballroom. Budget: $15,000-40,000 for 80-120 guests.
2. Winery wedding: Ceremony in the vineyard, reception in the estate barn or pavilion. This is Niagara's strongest format. Budget: $20,000-50,000+ depending on the estate.
3. NOTL heritage: Ceremony at a historic inn or Fort George, reception at a Queen Street venue. Intimate, elegant, walkable. Budget: $12,000-35,000.
Falls-View Venues
Oakes Garden Theatre: the classic free outdoor ceremony spot with falls as backdrop. Free to use (permit required). Seats up to 200. Book 6-12 months ahead for summer Saturdays.
Fallsview Casino Resort: ballrooms with floor-to-ceiling falls views. All-inclusive packages from $150/person. The view does the decorating.
Sheraton Fallsview: ceremony terrace with direct falls sightline. Mid-range pricing compared to the casino. Good for 60-100 person events.
Table Rock Welcome Centre: available for private events. The closest indoor venue to the falls. Premium pricing.
Winery Venues
Ravine Vineyard: rustic barn venue, up to 150 guests, vineyard ceremony backdrop. One of the most popular winery wedding venues in Ontario. Book 12+ months ahead.
Château des Charmes: formal estate setting, indoor and outdoor options, up to 200 guests. Higher price point but polished.
Inniskillin: ceremony among the vines, reception in the barrel aging room. Strong icewine connection for winter weddings.
Hernder Estate Wines: converted 1860s barn, up to 250 guests. One of the larger winery venues. Good value for bigger weddings.
Peller Estates: luxury estate with restaurant-quality catering. Premium pricing. The underground barrel cellar is a unique cocktail hour space.
Elopements and Small Ceremonies
Niagara is excellent for elopements. Elope Niagara and similar services offer all-inclusive packages (officiant, photographer, flowers, location) starting at $800-1,500.
Popular elopement spots: Oakes Garden Theatre (free), Queenston Heights (free), any NOTL winery (private booking), Niagara Parks locations (permit $200-500).
Best elopement season: September-October. The colours add atmosphere and availability is easier than summer.
Planning Timeline
18-24 months ahead: Book winery venues for summer Saturdays (they fill first). 12 months: Book falls-view hotels, photographer, officiant. 6 months: Book restaurant or caterer, accommodation blocks for guests. 3 months: Finalize guest transport (NOTL is 20 min from falls — plan shuttles).
Winter weddings (November-March) are 30-40% cheaper and much easier to book on short notice. Icewine harvest season adds a unique Niagara element.
